UK Public demands refund after Trident missile defense system declared pointless:
In light of the recent leaked documents by the Ministry of Defence there has been a public outcry regarding the billions wasted on defence. Though many are concerned with the global impact an admission of this magnitude will have, at home people seem more concerned with the money that has, essentially, been flushed down the silo.
Although no-one has seen the email from the parliament chambers to the MOD stating that the Prime Minister had no intention of ever firing Trident, (or ‘pushing the button' as it was coined), should the UK come under attack from an enemy nation, the leak was quoted as being ‘reliable' by a High Court judge who met with the whistle blower.
With the announcement that the government plans to spend £15-£20 billion in the next 17 years on new nuclear submarines to carry these trident missiles (each costing upward of £15 million themselves) taxpayers are understandably furious and wondering if any of the UK's past Prime Ministers ever had the resolve to use the weapons they purchased on our behalf. The mother of two sons who are currently serving in Iraq told us:
"I find it disgusting that they (the government) are happy enough at the loss of British lives in wasted efforts like Iraq but the second you ask them to wipe out the Chinese if they are bombing us, they suddenly have scruples ..."
So what are the public demanding? Well, with the annual defence budget at £32 billion and with roughly 61 million residents in the UK it breaks down to approximately £525 a year per person and that is all this class action lawsuit is claiming for. A spokesperson for the law firm managing the case stated:
"Obviously it is difficult to quantify what each individual has lost financially to these missiles that will never be used. With some people paying 40% tax and some not paying taxes at all we decided on a reasonable figure for the government in the way of apology for misleading the public. £525 a year for 17 mislead years. The reason we have added even non-taxpayers, like children, to this class action is because their education and quality of life has been adversely affected by these funds being used inappropriately."
On being asked why they were only claiming for 17 years instead of the 25 years since Trident was brought into the UK in 1982 he replied:
"Although we only have the confession of the current Prime Minister that he would not fire Trident, we do not believe that either Tony Blair or John Major would have had the stones to fire them either. We think it is a fair assumption that Margaret Thatcher probably would have pushed the button given half the chance, so we are not claiming for the time she was in power."
If successful this lawsuit will put £8925 in the pocket of every UK resident.
